Oakland’s Pop-Up Hood: Borgo Italia

The charm,

One of the newest additions to Old Oakland is Borgo Italia, a true authentic taste of Italian food. Walking by Borgo on a recent morning with my husband, the fresh pastries beautifully displayed in the window caught our attention and we couldn’t resist going in to see what it was all about.  I was a little skeptical at first because most of the time pastries can be deceiving, they can look delicious, but end up tasting sugary and artificial.  Fabio, one of the restaurant owners welcomed us in and immediately made us feel at home and kindly offered us some samples because it sure is hard to choose.  After trying the samples, we were both pleasantly surprised at how fresh and delicious they were, Fabio informed us that they are Italian recipes and made on site. We picked up a few to go for the kids and Fabio added in some others on the house.  It’s rare these days to come across such hospitality, it reminded us of our time in Italy and definitely made us want to come back for a meal.

A couple of days later, as promised, we went back to have dinner.  Inside, the interior has a rustic comforting feel to it with many pieces from the decor coming from Italy.  There’s big windows that look out into the charming late 1800’s architecture in Old Oakland.  Perfect restaurant for a date, but it’s also accommodating to families in a way that still feels like you can go and have a nice dinner with the kids and enjoy the atmosphere and ambiance without having to resort to cheesy chain restaurants.  The food was a real taste of Old World Italy, homemade pasta and sauce, so fresh you can truly taste the difference. The inspiration behind the food and wine pairing comes from the region of Emilia-Romagna, Liguria and Toscana and you can find Fabio’s mama, Luigina in the kitchen cooking from the heart. Now, that’s rare!

I swore off carbs until I discovered Borgo. One of the few places I trust with my carbs intake. Totally worth every bite of pastry and the delicious savory egg pasta with meat ragu.Borgo is a relaxing and warm place to go for any occasion. Perfect for a romantic date and a night out with a loved one, but until then, I will be going there with my two children.

Fluently lived,
