Crown Nine is Oakland-based jewelry designer, Kate Ellen’s flagship store. I first stumbled upon her shop one with a friend after we picked up our girls’ afterschool nearby. We strolled over to Old Oakland and checked out the Pop Up Hood. It was a warm bright Friday afternoon and when we got to Crown Nine it was closed, but a couple minutes later Kate stylishly arrives from a beer run, lets us in and of course offers us two cold ones, now that’s a warm welcome!
While browsing the shop, Kate entertained and put our first graders (at the time) to work, and let them stamp the Crown Nine logo on their shopping bags, the girls loved being part of the action. Stepping into Crown Nine is more like walking into a well curated museum for jewelry, it’s visually pleasing to the eye. It is a clean modern space with some edge to it sprinkled with a touch of rock and roll glam. Along with housing her own jewelry line, Kate Ellen Metals, Crown Nine carries well-crafted jewelry with timeless appeal from talented local artisans. There is also a cool men’s selection.
Another cool option is their bridal selection, something different from the typical traditional bridal jewelry everyone is so used to seeing. If you’re interested in learning the craft, they offer specialized workshops. Crown Nine will definitely be a go to spot for us.
